Sea and Shore Life..
I started my sailing career at age of 21 in 1961 and I joined NUSI in 1969.
I am really proud to say that my career was groomed by NUSI. I am 60 and got retired from NUSI on 8th February 2008. I have sailed for about 30 years and came ashore eight years back and since then I have been active member of this esteemed union.
I started my career with Scindia steamships and later on during my sailing tenure I experienced sailing with few other companies as well. My overall sea experience was fantastic. I think I have achieved everything one can desire sailing on different types of ships. My experience with Scindia always recalls me the best days of my life. I still have very high regards for scindia steamships, a pioneer shipping company of India.
My Family
My wife is working with Taj Group, My son is a pilot and my daughter is an MBA and working with multinational company.
Special Tanks to NUSI
NUSI not only just helps the seaman but also takes care of their families with a lot of welfare schemes like education and medical facilities. After completion of 30 years of sailing I was absorbed in NUSI. I was very much interested to join NUSI so that I can learn and explore more on shipping industry. At the same time 30 years was a big seatime. I wanted to devote my rest of life for the welfare of my sailing brother which made me to come ashore and join NUSI. I feel myself very lucky that I was one of the team member in NUSI to actively participated in agitation to claim Rs.92.5 crores from the government for my seafarer brothers.
Change in profile of seafarers ratings
During my times seamen where not exposed to many things like education etc. whereas now seamen are well educated. Previously most of the seaman were just 10th pass, But now you can easily find seaman with BSc degree as well. Nowadays most of the seaman are motivated to study and pass their exams to become officers. I really feel proud of such seamen becoming officers. I feel if these seamen are guided properly they can prove themselves as responsible officer. Overall this can also helps us to overcome the problem of shortage of officers. This is the most precious time when our government has to really think of this class.
Future Plans
I have been acquainted with lot of companies and learnt a lot on trade union activities which proved advantageous in my retired life. After all I am retired not tired. I still have lots of option as my zeal for welfare of seafarers cannot stop me to work. At this moment I really don’t have any plans to join anywhere or start something of my own, But whatever I will do, I will always be a mariner and for mariners.
Finally again I would like to say that I am happy retired person, But not tired.
