
In a true gesture of solidarity and respect to an accomplished veteran, the industry got together to a commemorative function to honour Capt. T.K. Joseph recently. Capt. Joseph has been the Captain Superintendent of TS Rajendra and Principal of LBS College.
Born in 1932 at Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Captain Joseph completed his intermediate science at Madras Christian College before joining TS Duffering as cadet in 1950.
Capt Joseph began his career with Scindia Steam Navigation with British Captains on cargo ships. Capt. Joseph acquired a reputation in no time as an efficient Deck Officer. Very soon he secured Command of M.V. JAL USHA, with Scindia Steam Navigation- indeed a rare honour of the times.
Capt. Joseph's academic progression during this phase was interspersed with brilliant performances. He had obtained all the certificates of Competency with remarkable ease. An early feather in his cap was the Gold Medal he secured in the 1961 examination of Master's Certificate of Competency (F.G.). Continuing his trail of success, Capt. Joseph was selected by the government of India through UPSC for the faculty of then Nautical & Engineering College, Bombay to rise to the position of Vice Principal in 1977. Earlier his academic acumen was proved again with a Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Arch's (RSA) upon securing the first position in the entire Common Wealth in the examination of the Extra Master Certificate of Competency, of the UK Government.
Capt. Joseph was promoted to the rank of Capt. Superintendent of Training Ship Rajendra in 1983 and was later appointed as Principal of LBS Nautical & Engineering College and had served in this capacity until he superannuated from Civil Services in 1990. Capt. Joseph continued to serve the industry as consultant to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in Maritime Education for a decade.
The industry has wholeheartedly hailed the passion with which Capt. Joseph took up teaching. His students fondly remember his selfless contributions to the career boosts he had provided to them. Students describe his teaching method as graceful that brought along with it prestige which earned him goodwill from the shipping industry and a multitude of merchant navy officers. His exemplary conduct and sincere service has touched friends, and acquaintances from all over.
Capt. Joseph remained fondly attached to teaching. He was Director, FOSMA (Training) and was actively associated with LBSCAMSAR & other post sea training institutes until 2005. The long and eventful career of Capt. Joseph have seen him author textbooks on Ship Stability, Ship's Magnetism and Principles of Navigation besides others.
The industry accords a standing ovation to this endearing and highly successful and effective visionary maritime leader. During his career Capt. Joseph has personally reached out to generations of seafarers in the merchant navy. The industry rises on the occasion of his 75th year of life to pay a fitting tribute for all that he has he been for the industry. The industry also sends out a special note of appreciation and thanks to his wife, Mrs. Annamma Joseph.
